Community Sport
Since 2001 MPYRAA has taken upon itself the challenge of providing youths with something meaningful they can do during holidays. MPYRAA’s main objective is the promotion of youths in the involvement of community development and leadership. Young people face a whole range of problems from unemployment to Prostitution, which can cause distress and even mental ill health. With issues like exam pressures, bullying, family problems, bad relationships, drugs causing huge stress, increase in propensity to commit crimes, gullibility to social vices, and above all, involvement in criminal gangs and perpetration of violence both in private and public arenas, this idea of community solidarity sports was cultivated. A vast majority of vulnerable youths are over pressed with daunting challenges requiring urgent and incessant support. MPYRAA gives one-to-one support to young people, offering practical training, help and advice in solving their problems, overcoming their challenges and improving their lives. Football is one of those activities that attracts the attention and involvement of these youths; and has the potency to gradually and positively transform their lives from isolated and depressed beings to effective team players, who begin to see beyond their seclusion, gloominess and darkness. It is all about the fun of a game that arouses passion at every level in Cameroonian life, but serving as a magic bullet that targets and shoots hopelessness, frustration, anger, resentment and replaces them with hope, contentment, intermittent joy, and above all, the spirit to work and win as a team. Football becomes a transformative and therapeutic event, serving as a cultural mediator, unifier and a portal for social development.MPYRAA encourages Football clubs that are made up young people to participate at its yearly inter-quarter football competition that is now in its 9th consecutive year in Kumba.
A total of 16 teams took part in this year’s competition which saw the triumph of A L’epoque football club of Fiango-Kumba taking home a cash prize of 200.000 FRS and a trophy with shields and medals.
Apart from Football, these youths get involved in other community activities like community cleaning, leadership training and peace-building initiatives.
